Your Season-by-Season Guide to Photo Shoots in Ontario

Ontario changes its face every few months, and honestly, that's a gift for anyone who loves photos. Cherry blossoms in spring, sunflower fields in summer, orchards and fall colour in autumn, twinkling lights in winter. Below is our running list of the prettiest seasonal spots across the province, organized by month so you know exactly when to go. Planning an engagement or couple's shoot around one of these? Spring (April-May): Cherry Blossoms and Tulips

  • High Park (Toronto): the classic pick for cherry blossoms, densest near the Grenadier Cafe, with the reflections at Grenadier Pond as a calmer bonus spot. Peak bloom lands the last week of April and lasts about 7 to 10 days, so watch the bloom reports and go early on a weekday morning to skip the crowd.
  • Kariya Park (Mississauga) and the trees near Exhibition Place and U of T: a quieter alternative, much less busy.
  • JP Niagara Tulip Farm and Pingle's Farm Market: tulip fields in the hundreds of thousands, blooming late April into early May.
  • Saunders Farm: a young apple orchard backdrop with a windmill.
  • Best light: early morning or the last hour before sunset. Midday sun on pale blossoms tends to blow out.

Summer (July-August): Sunflowers and Lavender

  • Davis Family Farm (Caledon East): roughly 45 acres of sunflowers, photo props scattered through the field, plus Sunset Tuesdays when they stay open until 9pm for golden hour.
  • The Sunflower and Wellness Farm (Inglewood): over 700,000 blooms across 30 plus acres, late July into early September.
  • Sunflower Fields of Markham (Highway 48): easiest to reach from downtown Toronto. Peak bloom is short, usually 2 to 3 weeks, so book early.
  • Christel Lake Lavender (Uxbridge): rows of purple set against a spring fed lake.
  • Hereward Farms (Orangeville): over 6,000 lavender plants. Both bloom late June through mid August.
  • Best light: shoot early morning for the best colour saturation, lavender and sunflowers both wilt visibly by mid afternoon on hot days.

Fall (September-October): Apples, Pumpkins and Foliage


  • Albion Orchards (Caledon): a perennial favourite, named a top Canadian orchard by Chatelaine and Food Network. Apple picking runs late August through late October.
  • Chudleigh's (Milton): the classic pick, with a corn maze and market on site.
  • Algonquin Park's Highway 60 corridor: usually peaks the last week of September into the first week of October.
  • Muskoka and Haliburton (Highway 118 and Highway 169): follow close behind in early October, the two easiest scenic drives.
  • High Park and the Beltline Trail: closer to home, both colour up nicely by mid October.
  • Downey's Farm Market and Pingle's Farm Market (Caledon and Hampton): big pick your own pumpkin patches with corn mazes, mid September through late October. Thanksgiving weekend is peak colour and peak crowds at once, so a weekday visit is worth the extra planning.

Winter (November-January): Lights and Snow

  • Niagara Falls: the biggest free light show in the province, mid November through early January, with over 8km of illuminated displays from Queen Victoria Park to Dufferin Islands and the falls themselves lit up at night.
  • Casa Loma's Holiday Lights Tour (Toronto): turns the castle gardens into a walk through wonderland.
  • Distillery Winter Village: cobblestone streets strung with lights plus a big tree in Trinity Square.
  • Nathan Phillips Square: hosts Cavalcade of Lights with a skating rink and a lit up City Hall as backdrop.
  • St. Marys WinterLights: outside the city, over 100 displays you can walk or drive through.
  • Best for snow: book the morning right after a fresh snowfall, the parks and trails are at their prettiest before foot traffic packs it down, and the low winter sun gives a nice warm edge light even at midday.
